LOS ANGELES — The organization that ensures animal safety in film and television productions said Wednesday it is investigating whether a frightened dog was forced into churning water during the making of “A Dog’s Purpose. ”
American Humane has also suspended its safety representative who worked on the film and is hiring an independent investigator to explore the matter, said Mark Stubis, a spokesman for the organization.
The incident came to light when celebrity site TMZ.com posted a minute-long video it says was shot during production of “A Dog’s Purpose. ”
It shows a German shepherd apparently terrified to get into a pool and a trainer forcing the dog into the water.
Universal Pictures, which is releasing “A Dog’s Purpose” on Jan. 27, has not responded to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a Twitter post that dog lovers should boycott the film “to send the message that dogs & other animals should be treated humanely, not as props. ”
Actor Josh Gad, who lends his voice to a dog in the film, issued a statement on Twitter saying he has asked the studio and production team for an explanation of what he calls “disturbing images. ”
He said that while the finished film is “one of the most beautiful love letters to animals I have ever seen,” he was troubled by the video.
“I am shaken and sad to see any animal put in a situation against its will,” Gad wrote. A publicist for the actor confirmed the post was authentic.

W czwartek do trzeciej rundy awansowały też m.in. występująca z “szóstką” Słowaczka Dominika Cibulkova i turniejowa “piątka” Czeszka Karolina Pliskova. O godz. 9 na kort wyjdzie Agnieszka Radwańska. Trzecia rakieta świata zmierzy się z Chorwatką Mirjaną Lucic-Baroni.

'Galvanizing unity': Janelle Monáe, Maxwell, Angelique Kidjo among Women's March on Washington performers

0

NewsHubWe’re experiencing a moment of relative calm in the entertainment world in these few days between the conclusion of Golden Globe Awards and the start of the Sundance Film Festival. But there is still plenty of action. Here’s what’s new and interesting in entertainment and the arts:
Janelle Monáe, Maxwell and Angelique Kidjo will be among the performers taking the stage Saturday as part of the Women’s March on Washington, D. C., event organizers announced Wednesday.
Also set to perform at the National Mall on the first day of the Trump administration: Toshi Reagon, Samantha Ronson, Emily Wells, DJ Rekha, MC Lyte, St. Beauty, Beverly Bond, Alia Sharief, DJ Rimarkable, Amber Coffman, the Indigo Girls, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Climbing PoeTree.
“Music has always been a powerful tool for galvanizing unity and I believe that singing and standing together, our voices will be stronger than any force that tries to repress us,” Monáe said in a statement, calling the march a “critical movement to bring justice and equality to all. ”
“Fistful of Tears” singer Maxwell added, “We are here because women are every bit as capable if not more able to pursue any goal they set forth for themselves. Were it not for the limitless depths of their love we would not be the men that we are. ”
Kidjo, who was born in West Africa, said she wanted to remind people of the importance of cultural diversity.
The rally, which will include speeches as well as performances, begins at 10 a.m. EST. A special version of “Ella’s Song” will cap the rally, with marchers invited to sing along. The march will begin at 1:15 p.m.
The classic protest anthem was written in honor of civil rights leader Ella Baker by Bernice Johnson Reagon , Toshi Reagon’s mom. Reagon’s new take on it can be heard here.
Thousands of Angelenos who can’t make it to Washington on Saturday are expected to gather that day in downtown L. A. for Women’s March Los Angeles. Rose powers slumping Knicks past Celtics 117-106

0

NewsHubNew York’s locker room door opened and music was blaring in the background.
It’s not a scene that’s happened after too many Knicks’ games lately.
Derrick Rose matched his season high with 30 points, and the slumping Knicks beat the Boston Celtics 117-106 on Wednesday night.
New York played without injured starters Kristaps Porzingis and Joakim Noah, but Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Willy Hernangomez each scored 17 points to help make up for their absence.
“It was a big win for us to come in here and kind of put everything to the side in spite of what’s been surrounding the team, and really focus in on playing basketball and winning,” said forward Carmelo Anthony, who reiterated his desire to stay in New York on Tuesday.
It was just their third win in 14 games in a season that’s been sliding away quickly since the calendar turned to 2017.
“These guys are a determined bunch,” New York coach Jeff Hornacek said. “They’ve had some bad breaks, we’ve had some bad games, but they stay in there together. ”
Isaiah Thomas led Boston with 39 points, his 13th time this season with 30 or more points. Jae Crowder added 21 for the Celtics, who lost for only the fourth time in 17 games.
Al Horford, Boston’s big free-agent acquisition during the summer, had five points on 2-of-14 shooting. He was 1 for 8 on 3-point attempts.
“That was definitely tough for me because they were good looks,” he said. “I even felt good on a few of them. They just didn’t go in. ”
Boston closed to 97-96 on Jaylen Brown’s two free throws with just under eight minutes to play, but Justin Holiday and Courtney Lee nailed 3-pointers 29 seconds apart, pushing New York’s lead back to seven.
Rose then capped an 8-0 spree by putting in his own miss after Thomas missed a jumper – his seventh straight shot that was off.
“Just playing my game,” said Rose, who was 13 for 24 from the floor. “Just waiting for coach to call my number, just like tonight — he called my number. ”
TIP-INS
Knicks: Porzingis was out with a sore left Achilles and Noah was sidelined by a sore left ankle. Porzingis missed his fourth straight game, but did shoot before the game. Noah played in their last game. Both big men are expected to undergo MRIs on Thursday. … F Lance Thomas was also out (fractured left orbital bone).
Celtics: G Avery Bradley was a late scratch with a sore right Achilles after warming up. He played in Monday’s win, but had missed the previous four games after straining the same Achilles.
THAT SAYS IT ALL
“We didn’t have a look most of the night that you felt good about,” Boston coach Brad Stevens said.
HE WANTS TO BE AN ALL-STAR
When the All-Star starters are announced Thursday night, Thomas said he’ll be watching the nationally televised NBA game.
As far as being one: “I should be,” he said.
BOARD DAMAGE
The Knicks owned a 57-33 rebounding edge, doubling up Boston 18-9 on the offensive glass.
“The more desperate team, the better team tonight, the more aggressive team — they won,” Stevens said.
SPECIAL MOMENT
The fans gave a loud ovation to 11-year-old Stephen Register of Needham, Massachusetts, late in the opening quarter when he was shown on the Jumbotron.
On Tuesday, as part of a Make-A-Wish memory, the team signed him to an honorary one-day contract and he practiced with Celtics players Amir Johnson and Kelly Olynyk, received a personalized team jersey, and participated in a press conference with players asking him questions.
He was diagnosed with intractable epilepsy.
UP NEXT
Knicks: Host Washington on Thursday night for their third game in four days. The Wizards won the only other matchup – 119-112 in Washington on Nov. 17.
Celtics: Host Portland on Saturday, the first of two meetings between the teams this season.

Police: Man assaulted wife after dream that she was cheating

Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 | 8:44 a.m.
EYNON, Pa. — Police say a Pennsylvania man tried to strangle his wife after he woke up from a dream in which she was cheating on him.
Archibald police say 49-year-old Conrad Rudalavage had been drinking before he fell asleep, then woke up Saturday convinced that his wife was unfaithful.
Police say he attacked, choked and threatened to kill her until his teenage daughter intervened and tried to call 911. Police say he then attacked the daughter.
Police say the girl was able to escape and run to neighbors for help. The neighbor helped pull Rudalavage off his wife, who was treated for bruises and other injuries to her face, head and neck.
Rudalavage remained jailed on attempted homicide and other charges Thursday. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call.

South Korea court rejects arrest warrant for Samsung heir

0

NewsHubSEOUL, South Korea — A Seoul court on Thursday rejected an arrest warrant sought for Samsung heir Lee Jae-Yong, it said, part of a widening probe into a corruption scandal engulfing President Park Geun-Hye.
The Seoul Central District Court turned down a request by prosecutors on Monday for Lee’s arrest on charges of bribery, embezzlement and perjury.
The demand had sent shock waves through Samsung, the world’s biggest smartphone maker and a key part of the South Korean economy where Lee became the de facto head after his father suffered a heart attack in 2014.
But the rejection dealt a blow to prosecutors’ plan to question Park — impeached by parliament last month — on bribery charges no later than early February.
It also undermined prosecutors’ move to expand investigations into several other companies that have “donated” millions of dollars to dubious foundations Park’s jailed confidante Choi Soon-Sil used for her personal benefit, Yonhap news agency said.
Lee, 48, was seen leaving a detention center where he had awaited the decision for the previous 18 hours.
With a slight smile, wearing a long coat and tie and carrying a shopping bag, he was led out by a security guard to a barrage of camera flashes, and was driven away without responding to questions from a horde of journalists.
Investigators said Lee gave or promised some 43 billion won ($36.3 million) worth of bribes to Choi, allegedly in return for the state pension fund’s backing of a merger of two Samsung affiliates — deemed crucial for Lee’s hereditary succession at Samsung.
But the prosecutors have so far failed to come up with solid evidence, the court said.
“It is difficult to accept the reasons, need and justification” to issue the warrant, it said in a statement released by the prosecutors, citing the lack of clear-cut evidence.
Samsung reportedly claimed Park, who has enormous executive power that could affect seriously the company’s future, had pressured it to make donations.
Samsung lawyers said the point of contention was whether the money changed hands in return for assistance from the government.
“The key point is whether any favours were given. We explained our position very clearly,” Lee’s attorney told reporters Wednesday after the court finished questioning Lee at a hearing.
Samsung is the single biggest contributor to the foundations and separately paid Choi millions of euros, allegedly to bankroll her daughter’s equestrian training in Germany.
Prosecutors have been probing whether Samsung’s payments were aimed at securing government approval for a controversial merger of two of its units in 2015.
The combination of Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T was seen as a key step towards ensuring a smooth third-generation power transfer to Lee.
It was opposed by many investors who said it wilfully undervalued Samsung C&T’s shares. But it was backed by the National Pension Service, a major Samsung shareholder.
Park, accused of colluding with Choi to extract money from the firms and letting her friend meddle in a wide range of state affairs, was impeached by parliament last month.
Both Park and Choi, who is on trial for coercion and abuse of power, have denied any wrongdoing as the Constitutional Court is reviewing the validity of the impeachment.
If the court upholds the impeachment, a presidential vote will be held in 60 days, with Park immediately losing executive privilege that protects her from criminal indictment. CBB

Tourism to North Korea up despite heavy sanctions

0

NewsHubNorth Korea is under heavy sanctions, but that hasn’t stopped travelers from visiting the country.
According to Dylan Harris, the owner of British agency Lupine Travel, reservations to North Korea booked through his company are up 20 percent in the last three months, Voice of America reported Wednesday.
The United Nations Security Council adopted a new sanctions resolution last November that targets North Korea’s nuclear weapons program by tightening restrictions on coal exports.
Pyongyang has also been condemned for various human rights abuses, according to a U. N. Commission of Inquiry that has been tasked to investigate cases of violations that include torture, execution, arbitrary incarceration, deliberate starvation and enslavement.
None of those findings, however, may be stopping the most curious global traveler.
According to Harris, the latest sanctions are having no impact on tourism, and tensions on the Korean peninsula have not resulted in mass cancellations.
Harris said the one reservation travelers have is the risk of being arrested in North Korea.
Foreign visitors to the relatively isolated country have previously been detained for violating strict rules, including U. S. student Otto Warmbier, who was charged with taking down a political slogan from a hotel in Pyongyang.
Warmbier is currently in North Korea detention.
To meet the rising demand for North Korea travel, Harris said Lupine Travel plans to conduct a group tour to North Korea on a monthly basis in 2017.
Korea Konsult, a Swedish travel agency specializing in North Korea tours, is also planning to expand its North Korea business, according to VOA.
On its website, Korea Konsult states the company runs 40 group tours annually.
A spokesman for the agency said events like nuclear and missile tests have a temporary negative effect on tourism, but its impact lasts at most two weeks.
