In a clear trend at CES 2017, three automotive equipment makers presented augmented reality (AR) concepts for the car, which could greatly enhance safety by placing warnings and environment information right on the windshield. Rather than distracting, this imagery serves to highlight objects around the car.
Harman includes AR as a feature of its Life-Enhancing Intelligent Vehicle Solution (LIVS); Continental showcased AR as the fruits of a partnership with holographic projector maker DigiLens; and Visteon made AR part of a new head-up display concept. All of these companies supply electronics to major automakers, and used CES to show off their latest technologies.
Head-up displays, which show vehicle information at the base of the windshield within the driver’s view, have gained traction in recent years, appearing on many car models. These displays typically show vehicle speed and navigation directions, so the driver doesn’t need to look away from the road. AR goes beyond head-up display technology by using GPS and sensors to pick out objects in the car’s environment, calling out those objects for the driver. AR can be very helpful in urban environments where the amount of traffic, pedestrians and signage becomes overwhelming.
Harman’s system can place street signs over intersections, greatly helping drivers.
Harman showed off its LIVS concept in a modified Chrysler Pacifica, using a large dashboard-mounted LCD to show how AR would work, among other features of the system. Running a simulated video on the screen, the system added markers for other cars detected by sensors, letting the driver know if they were going faster or braking, and painted street signs over the video at intersections. This latter feature seemed very useful as it is not always easy to find street signs in the real world, causing distraction for drivers.
Although much of the information Harman showed on its AR system would come from the car’s sensors, information like street signs will rely on having a good GPS signal giving the car’s actual location. Harman said it is working on projecting this system in a head-up display, to make it easier for the driver to see its information.
Continental focused on the projection technology that could make AR a reality. Its partner DigiLens develops compact projectors with high-resolution displays, typically for augmented reality glasses. With DigiLens technology, Continental proposes a head-up display that projects over a larger area of the windshield than current projectors. As such, it could show a variety of sensor-derived information about the car’s environment.
Continental shows how a projector from partner DigiLens can add useful driver information to the windshield.
The Continental system is current technology, which could be implemented by an automaker in a new generation model soon.
Visteon, a maker of instrument cluster displays and infotainment systems for the automotive industry, brought a demonstration to CES of a sensor-driven head-up display that painted simple graphics on the windshield. In its simulated driving example, the system painted imagery on other cars on the road, which highlighted potential dangers for a driver. The color-coded imagery showed, for example, a red graphic around a car ahead that was braking. It could also highlight pedestrians on the side of the road.
From these AR demonstrations, it becomes clear that the projection technology is now production-ready. These suppliers showed off new ideas in using car sensor data, and AR makes an important new safety feature.

That’s why youtuber DaveHax recommends you tie your house key right into the laces of your shoe. It will be easy to get to when you need it and there’s no risk of it falling out of a pocket as you jog along. Just be sure you unthread one of your laces down a notch before attaching your key and re-threading. Otherwise your key could go flying if your shoelaces get untied.

As ubiquitous as it is, GitHub is a little baffling for beginners because it’s not evident at the start how it actually works. So, GitHub made a video to help make sense of it all.
The video is essentially a beginner’s guide to GitHub’s terminology, how it works, why you’d use it, and more. It walks you through how pull requests work, when you’d fork a project, and more. It’s a straightforward introduction that doesn’t provide much more than a few vocabulary words, but it’s still useful for anyone new to GitHub.

Porsche ‘s GTS line promises increased performance and a bit more style than its more traditional variants. That continues with the 2017 Porsche 911 GTS family.
A black targa bar shouldn’t get me this excited, but here I am.
Thanks to a new turbocharger, the 3.0-liter turbo flat-six engine puts out a solid 450 horsepower, or 20 horsepower more than the GTS used to put out with its naturally aspirated engine. No matter which variant you’re looking at, you can order it with either a seven-speed manual or Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch.
Easy ways to differentiate the GTS include 20-inch black wheels, slightly tinted taillights, a new trim piece between the taillights and a whole bunch of badges. The 911 Targa 4 GTS also features its targa bar in black, because of course it does. All models sport the wider body of the all-wheel-drive variants.
The 2017 Porsche 911 GTS family goes on sale in March.

Remember Nokia? It’s back! Again. Well, sort of.
The 5.5-inch phone comes with a 1,920×1080-pixel resolution, a Snapdragon 430 processor, a 16MP camera on the back, an 8MP shooter on the front and 4GB of RAM. That’s all housed in an aluminum body, rare for non-premium phones and especially impressive considering the Nokia 6 will sell for 1,700 yuan, which converts to $245, £200 and AU$330.
The move is another reminder of how huge the Chinese market is. The company noted that there are over 550 million smartphone users in China, nearly double the entire population of the US. To get a significant share of that pie, HMD will have to battle popular local brands like Oppo, Vivo, Huawei and Xiaomi.

The Golden Globe Awards aren’t noted for In Memoriam tributes — that kind of remembrance is usually left to the Academy Awards and the Emmys. But on Sunday night, the awards show couldn’t go without acknowledging two of the numerous devastating losses the acting world suffered in 2016.
Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher , the mother-daughter duo who died a day apart in late December, were honored with a sweet collection of both professional and personal film clips.
The homage began with footage of Reynolds holding and playing with a young Fisher, then transitioned into film clips from their roles in Star Wars , “Singin’ in the Rain,” “The Singing Nun,” ” When Harry Met Sally ” and other productions.
The clip package was set to Fisher and Reynolds singing “You Made Me Love You” on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2011.
Fisher’s brother and Reynolds’ son, Todd Fisher, thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring his sister and his mother.
Acclaimed actress Meryl Streep also remembered Fisher when accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. After expounding on her anger at president-elect Donald Trump’s 2015 imitation of Serge Kovaleski , a reported with a disability, Streep cited a Fisher comment.
“As my dear departed friend Princess Leia once said to me, ‘Take your broken heart, make it into art,'” Streep said.
