Google’s Android operating system gets most of the attention in the internet giant’s mobile business. But it has another mobile ecosystem—called Android One—that’s just as important. Available since 2014, Android One is Google’s mobile OS for emerging markets. It’s a lightweight mobile ecosystem that supports lower-cost handsets in markets where people much less likely to afford smartphones with all the bells and whistles. Since it’s lighter edition of Android, it helps keep prices down for people who might not be able to afford a Google Pixel or iPhone but want to keep up with others who live in a mobile-first world.
