NSFAS Funding 06 February 2017, 11:15
I applied to study through UNISA this year as I thought I finally have the freedom to do so after my stints of years of long hours of work and little pay. I’ve hopped from call center to call center with no prospects of being funded for my fees. I had to look after myself in that regard.
Well I took the plunge and applied, got accepted and was also informed about NSFAS’s MO for the first time in my UNISA life. WOW. I can actually study and pay back the money when I’m done. I’m not quiet sure why I was never told about this before. EVER!
On the 20th of October 2016 I applied for NSFAS funding also. I took heart from news feeds and assurances from the Department of Higher Learning and from NSFAS itself that basically guaranteed no pupil would be turned away. It’s been more than 3 months I’ve been waiting now. The sharecall number 08600nsfas number basically just gets disconnected when I attempt to call. So I’m in the dark. Well almost. UNISA sent me an SMS this week informing me that the closing date for registration fees is the 5th of February this year. Another wow. This even though I went to the regional office,asked them about the status of my application for funding,and was told that they were equally in the dark.
It seems to me like NSFAS and the Department of Higher Education are good at slogans and not transferring those sound bites to policy.
