Former city leader out of jail until misconduct conviction appeal
Donald Tsang Yam-kuen spoke of the “many heartaches” he has suffered, after Monday’s won him a break from prison life. The former chief executive was released until he can appeal his misconduct conviction, on condition that he pay HK$100,000 and remain in Hong Kong. “During this time of course my heart experienced many heartaches that cannot be described in writing, ” he said after the hearing. “But … I still believe in Hongkongers, I still love Hong Kong. Thank you all.” The 72-year-old thanked his legal team as well as the public and multiple religious groups in Hong Kong, Canada and Britain for their support and sympathy. “They believed that I was innocent, ” he said. He paid tribute to his prison guards, whom he said treated him impartially during his time in maximum-security Stanley Prison. “This proves that Hong Kong is a rule of law society, ” he said.
