Kyoto Ohata wanted to be able to get close to the birds without causing them to scatter. So she came up with a very clever disguise — for her feet, at least.
Kyoto created a pair of high heels that look eerily exactly like living pigeons and wore them outside, catching attention of locals and the entire internet.
From afar, the shoes are indistinguishable from real pigeons — and even up close they look quite like them.
Kyoto designed the shoes so the pigeons’ orange feet hide a stiletto heel, and toes are inside the tail feathers.
This means the birds are always ‘walking’ backwards when Kyoto moves forwards, but they’re still quite convincing.
She meticulously added pieces of wool, painted the creation, and layered felt — she deemed real feathers to expensive and time-consuming — to make the wings.
She also used what looks like unraveled felt to cover the feet, which have a wire base, before attaching everything to a pair of cheap shoes she bought at a store.
In pictures seen on BoredPanda, several living pigeons can be seen getting quite close to her shoes at Ueno Park in Taitō, Japan, possibly fooled.
Humans in the park were certainly impressed, stopping to take pictures. She said on her website that she ended up attracting more people than birds.
