A live-action adaptation of the classic anime series “Cowboy Bebop” is in development at Tomorrow Studios, the company announced Tuesday.
The 1998 Japanese original is a space western story following Spike Spiegel and his rag-tag crew of bounty hunters, or Cowboys, as they try to capture the galaxy’s worst criminals and survive the unexpected dangers they encounter throughout space, sometimes saving the world in the process but always leaving millions in damages.
“Thor: Ragnarok’s” Chris Yost is attached to write the adaptation, which will be executive produced by Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio and original producers Sunrise Inc. Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios will also executive produce, alongside Matthew Weinberg.
“Sunrise continues to create great content and to be one of the most innovative companies in the business. We are excited to work with them in bringing this beloved anime to the U. S. and global marketplace as a live action series, ” said Adelstein in a statement.
“The animated version has long resonated with audiences worldwide, and with the continued, ever growing, popularity of anime, we believe a live action version will have an incredible impact today.”
