North Korea said it released a U. S. student earlier this week on humanitarian grounds, according to a report from the state news organization on Thursday.
Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, is currently in a coma. He arrived in Cincinnati Tuesday night after being held by the North Korean regime for over 17 months.
The college student’s parents were told he has been in a coma for about a year. Warmbier contacted botulism, which causes paralysis, according to CNN.
Warmbier was found guilty of committing a hostile act against the regime in March of 2016 and sentenced to 15 months of hard labor.
