While there were wide reports that the OnePlus 5’s camera offers 2x optical zoom, the firm has now come out to say, that isn’t quite the case. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei chimed in with details.
After months of waiting, OnePlus finally revealed its latest handset this week, the OnePlus 5. While there are a lot of things to like about the device, the firm was keen on explaining the improvements it had made from previous efforts with its new camera. The device offers a dual sensor camera, which has become quite popular over the past year with many manufacturers. While many outlets reported that the handset offered 2x optical zoom like the iPhone 7 Plus, it appears that now, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
According to OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, the handset does not offer 2x optical but instead has a 2x lossless zoom. Pei discusses how the « optical zoom is at 1.6x, the remaining 0.4x is realized through SmartCapture multiframe technology » on the OnePlus 5. What this means is that the cameras rely on a mix of optical and digital effects to compose its photos. While this might not be a huge deal to some, it is still good that the firm decided to clarify things.
Those that are interested in picking up a OnePlus 5, you will have to wait until the sale opens to the public on June 27. Previously, the firm did offer an early pre-sale event using a special code, but that has now closed. The 6GB RAM model is priced at $479, while the 8GB RAM model is priced at $539.
