July 2 (UPI) — A Pennsylvania man turned himself in Sunday and was charged with murder in the road rage shooting of an 18-year-old woman four days earlier.
David Desper, 28, of Trainer, Pa., is charged with first- and third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime and reckless endangering on Route 100 in West Goshen Township, about 30 miles from Philadelphia around 5: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said at a news conference.
After a three-state manhunt, he surrendered to authorities around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Bianca Nikol Roberson, returning home from shopping for college clothes, and another driver started to merge into the same lane, « jostling for the position, » said Michael Noone, first assistant district attorney for Chester County. Roberson’s vehicle crashed into a tree, police said in a statement.
She was pronounced dead at the scene but the officers who responded to the crash determined that the teen had been shot in the head.
« They jockeyed for position and he wasn’t happy, so he pulled out a gun and shot Bianca in the head, killing her instantly, » Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said.
The area is near the border with Delaware and New Jersey. Police searched for a white man between 30 and 40 years old in a red pickup truck last seen exiting Route 202 onto Paoli Pike.
Police used video footage from surveillance cameras to identify the truck and its owner.
A single round from a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun killed Roberson, Hogan said.
Desper bought the gun legally in November 2015 and he had a permit for it, Hogan said. Police found the gun in Desper’s bedroom.
Roberson planned to attend Jacksonville University in the fall and had graduated from Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, Pa.
« She was a good girl, honor roll student, looking forward to going to college, » her father, Rodney Roberson, told WPVI-TV .
She had hoped to work for the FBI, her father said.
A Go Fund Me campaign to support Roberson’s family had raised $33,387 as of Sunday afternoon, exceeding the $25,000 goal.
