WhatsApp has announced that it now has over one billion daily active users – another major milestone for the fast-growing messaging platform. The service was acquired by Facebook in 2014, and has become increasingly popular in markets across the globe since then.
Its most recent growth was assured by its announcement in January 2016 that it was scrapping its $0.99 a year subscription fee, making the app free to use. Two weeks later, WhatsApp revealed that it had over a billion monthly active users.
The image above – which WhatsApp published yesterday – shows that the service now has 1.3 billion monthly active users, an increase of 30% over the last 18 months.
Last year, the company said that it still had « another 6 billion people to get on WhatsApp, and a long way left to go. » Given its considerable growth over the last year and a half, it seems to be making good progress towards that goal.
