Even though it only officially went on sale yesterday, Acer’s Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition is already out of stock on the Microsoft Store, as is the HP version of the headset.
In October, Microsoft announced that its partners – including Dell, ASUS, Lenovo, HP, and Acer – would be launching mixed reality headsets starting at $299, undercutting the rather high barrier of entry that most current VR experiences offer. Pre-orders for Acer’s and HP’s Developer Edition models opened up at the company’s Build 2017 developer conference.
Sales went live yesterday, and HP’s model was out of stock beforehand. Now, even Acer’s head-mounted display (HMD) is no longer available from the Microsoft Store. Unfortunately, it appears that it’s not available from physical Microsoft outlets either, or anywhere else, for that matter.
As for those that pre-ordered the headset, many users are reporting that their credit cards have been charged, but few have actually been shipped. It’s unclear how the lack of stock will affect those that have already ordered one.
Of course, if you really want a Windows Mixed Reality HMD, your only option for now is the 3Glasses Blubur S1, which we got to check out at Microsoft’s Build 2017 developer conference. It’s available internationally too, whereas Acer’s and HP’s headsets are exclusive to the United States.
