Police identify wrong way driver killed and person injured in crash

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI — The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office has identified the two victims in a wrong way crash, one of whom was killed and the other injured in a car fire.
The crash happened around 11: 27 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13 on southbound U. S 131, north of the Shelbyville exit in Martin Township.
Officers received a report of a northbound vehicle driven by 29-year-old Sean Michael Barone of the Wayland area facing the wrong way on the shoulder of the southbound lanes of U. S. 131.

Before arriving on scene, officers said Barone reportedly began driving the wrong way and several cars had to swerve to avoid his vehicle.
While en route, officers also received reports of a head on crash and car fire in the same location.
Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle on fire with 22-year-old Alexander Madison Wieland of Plainwell trapped inside. Officers used extinguishers to keep the fire at bay until Wayland Fire Department crews arrived and extinguished it completely.
Officers said Wieland was unable to avoid the vehicle driven by Barone and struck it head on, causing severe damage that caused a fire in the car’s engine compartment
Barone was transported to Metro Hospital where he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Wieland was transported to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital with a severe leg injury and concussion-like symptoms.
Officers said both drivers were wearing seat belts and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, in regards to Barone.
