Think you’ve got skills? PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will really put them to the test in battle royale on a deserted island.
Proving to be one of the bestselling games of 2017 so far on Steam, PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds is causing quite a stir. You can download the game now on PC but Xbox One and PS4 players will have to wait.
Brendan Greene is a pioneer of the Battle Royale genre and creator of the Battle Royale game mode on the ARMA series and ‘King of the Kill’ in H1Z1. He’s working on this new title with a veteran team at Bluehole.
There’s no official release date for the game just yet. However, you can play it on PC via Steam Early Access meaning you can play while the game is being developed – bugs and all.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) was released via Early Access on 23 March 2017 and has sold over four million copies since. It costs £26.99/$29.99 to download from Steam or Green Man Gaming and will launch, as it stands, on PS4 and Xbox One later this year.
Microsoft announced at Gamescom 2017 that it is publishing the game as a console launch exclusive for Xbox One later this year, but we still think PUBG will come to PS4 later on .
Whether that Q4 2017 release date gets pushed back is a big question as this is not uncommon. So far that is still the plan with the developer saying « we have decided that we are going push the full launch back a bit from the initial six-month timeframe, but want to assure you that we are still planning a full release before the end of Q4 2017. »
With that being said, designer Brendan Green has confirmed that Microsoft Studios is the official publisher of the console of the game. Hopefully with the added resources of Microsoft’s team, development should stay on track (or even speed up) for its Q4 2017 release.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a massively multiplayer online battle royale game. In other words it’s a free-for-all, last-player-standing-style survival shooter. Starting from nothing, players have to find weapons and supplies in order to stay alive.
« From when I first started making the Battle Royale game-mode in ARMA 2, I have always wanted to make a good game. With Bluehole, and their philosophy of creating ‘well made’ games, I am confident that together we can create a great game, » said Greene.
The official explaination of the game is this: « Players are dropped into a wide, open area, and they must fight to the death – all while the battlefield shrinks, adding pressure to all in its grip. Use a variety of interesting weapons and vehicles amid the Battlegrounds. »
The game includes various weapons such as guns, bows and melee weapons. There are also items, equipment and vehicles including a speedboat. You’ll also like Metro: Exodus.
You can play PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds solo but also as part of a team so you can come up with a strategy with friends. Up to 100 players can play in a battle royale in one go.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is played on a huge island map covering 8x8km with high levels of detail thanks to Unreal Engine 4.

With the game still in Early Access, it’s receiving regular updates with bug fixes, gameplay tweaks, and new features.

As part of the game’s development, Bluehole will hold weekly livestreams on Facebook to ‘showcase different elements’ of the open-world battle royale. They will be hosted by a Bluehole community manager and content creators from the PUBG community.
