The NBC drama had a costume nomination revoked after the academy determined that not enough of the nominated episode took place in the present.
When the 2017 Emmy nominations were announced in June, NBC’s “This Is Us” represented a rare bright spot for network television. The soapy family series earned 11 nominations, including one for best drama — the first time in six years that an ABC, CBS, Fox or NBC drama was nominated in that category.
“This Is Us” will still compete for that top honor, but its nomination count has dropped to 10. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences rescinded the show’s nomination for outstanding costumes for a contemporary series, limited series or movie after determining that not enough of the nominated episode took place in the present.
While most of “This Is Us” is set in the present day, the nominated episode, “ Moonshadow, ” features many flashbacks to the 1970s, when the central characters Jack and Rebecca meet for the first time. (“Moonshadow” was the Season 1 finale, and featured costume design by Hala Bahmet, a previous Emmy nominee.) But since less than 51 percent of the episode takes place within the past 25 years, the academy found it to be ineligible for the award.
Taking its slot will be Netflix’s “House of Cards, ” the sixth top vote-getter in the category, for the episode “Chapter 61.” It will compete with HBO’s “Big Little Lies, ” Fox’s “Empire, ” Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie” and Amazon’s “Transparent.” The Emmys will air on Sept. 17 on CBS.
