Authorities say a former GOP staffer and campaign worker was found shot to death in bed — and his roommate is in custody in connection to the murder.
Nick Corvino, 30, was shot 13 times while he was sleeping Tuesday at his Osceola County home, the Orlando Sentinel reported. He reportedly suffered gunshot wounds to his back, heads and legs.
Corvino had worked on GOP campaigns including a 2016 stint as central Florida political director for President Donald Trump, according to his LinkedIn profile .
His body was discovered Tuesday morning by authorities responding to a report of an alarm at the apartment.
When officers arrived, his roommate, Scott Waddell, answered the door with blood on his hands and feet, according to the police report.
Authorities found Corvino lying in bed in a bedroom and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Waddell, 45, was booked on first-degree murder charges at Osceola County Jail.
When interviewed about the crime, he asked officers multiple times if Corvino was dead, news station WJXT reported .
“He repeated numerous times he was fine but could not remember what happened before the cops showed up today at his home,” authorities wrote in the arrest affidavit.
Waddell told police that he and Corvino were drinking beer and watching television Monday night before they went to sleep.
The suspect said that he later woke up scared, but did not recall shooting the 30-year-old.
Deputies said that he claimed that he was mentally disabled and takes medication.
“He explained he suffers from nightmares and sometimes has homicidal thoughts wanting to kill young men,” the report said.
Waddell told investigators that he and Corvino have been “best friends for 10 years,” the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Covino was a central Florida regional manager for Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, according to his LinkedIn profile. He worked as a field director on Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s re-election campaign, and also served as a former district administrator for Florida state Rep. Jason Brodeur, who is a Republican.
Bondi said Tuesday that she was “heartbroken” over his death.
“Nick Corvino was a great young man who had his entire life ahead of him,” she said.
