As expected, the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and a business associate have been indicted. The charges, which include money laundering and conspiracy, are the first stemming from the investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.
But a surprise guilty plea from another campaign adviser may tell a more meaningful story about what the Trump campaign knew about Russian interference in the 2016 election — and when it knew it.
On today’s episode:
• Matt Apuzzo, a New York Times reporter who has been covering the Russia investigation, discusses the case against George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign.
Background reading:
• Mr. Papadopoulos’s plea represents the most explicit evidence that the Trump campaign was aware that the Russian government was trying to help Donald J. Trump and that the campaign was eager to accept that help.
• Court documents released on Monday show how Mr. Papadopoulos repeatedly sought to set up a meeting between the Russian government and Mr. Trump and his campaign officials.
• The White House said that none of the charges proved that the president had colluded with Russia.
• If you missed the flurry of developments on Monday, here’s a wrap-up .
