Boring Halloween costume? This artificial intelligence system can fix that.
Research scientist Janelle Shane trained a neural network to generate new costume ideas — and the results are both creative and hilarious. Sexy pumpkin pirate, shark cow and ghost pickle are just a few of the AI’s suggestions.
“It had trouble w/the sexy costumes, but loved sharks,” Shane tweeted on Oct. 26.
To set up the Halloween generator, Shane entered 4,500 costume names into the network after crowdsourcing from the internet. The AI then took that data and tried to learn patterns and combine words.
In the past, Shane has also created neural networks for kittens, beer and over the summer, tried to teach an AI how to tell knock-knock jokes.
“I would argue that the Halloween costume neural network is actually right up there at coming up with creative things that humans love,” Shane told Business Insider. “It can form its own rules about what it’s seeing rather than just memorizing.”
Shane has continued sharing lists of the AI’s Halloween costumes on Twitter, as well retweeting people who brought its ideas to life. One user shared her “30 second” Dragon of Liberty costume and one couple went as a Shark Princess and Professor Panda.
Shane told Inverse that her favorite AI-generated costume was Starfleet Shark. But she ended up going as “Ruth Vader Ginsberg” — an idea that a human submitted during the crowdsourcing stage. So maybe there’s hope for our species after all.
