STARKVILLE — Florida is targeting Dan Mullen as its next coach, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.
Mississippi State is expected to have a meeting around 5 p.m. Sunday, so a decision is anticipated at some point Sunday, sources said. A staff meeting was originally scheduled for earlier in the day and was postponed.
Mississippi State has been active in trying to negotiate a contract extension in recent weeks that would keep Mullen in Starkville. The belief around MSU, per sources, is that Mullen has a decision to make.
Mullen is 69-46 as the Bulldogs’ head coach, six wins shy of tying Jackie Sherrill’s all-time mark for most career wins at the school. Mullen has guided MSU to unprecedented heights.
Mullen produced three seasons of at least nine victories in the last seven years, including the school’s first back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2014 and 2015. To put that in perspective, there were only four nine-win seasons at Mississippi State in the 109 years prior to Mullen’s arrival. Bowl games have become the norm at MSU under Mullen, too. Prior to his arrival, the school’s record for consecutive bowl game appearances was three from 1998-2000. Next month, MSU will play in its eighth straight bowl game.
Mullen was Florida’s offensive coordinator from 2005-08 before he took the MSU head coaching job. Mullen’s old boss Scott Stricklin is now Florida’s athletic director after holding the same position at MSU. Florida is an elite job, one that has won national and SEC championships under multiple coaches in the recent past.
