« For a 17-year-old kid that just got shot, it’s just crazy how strong of a person he was being. »
Just before class began Tuesday at Marshall County High School, Daniel Austin, a student known as « Dan the Man, » was giving out high-fives, just as he does every day.
« As he was doing that he got shot, and he literally didn’t see it, » Austin’s brother Shane Story said.
Austin had been shot in the arm. He was one of many students that suffered gunshot wounds in a shooting at Marshall County High School that left two 15-year-old students dead.
Story said a teacher and another student picked Austin up, put him in a car and rushed him to a nearby hospital.
« It just scared the hell out of me, » Story said. « He got shot in the arm and I heard that his arm might be amputated. There is a 90 percent chance he’s going to keep his arm now, which I’m grateful for. »
Story spoke with his younger brother, who competes in Special Olympics bowling and basketball, just before he was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
« He was just like, ‘Be strong bro,’ and I was just like, ‘Whenever you’re done with this I want to see you for the whole next week, and I want to hang out with you,' » Story said. « I was just so scared. I just want to see him. »
