« The FCC said Tuesday that Hawaii has been testing alert capabilities. »
The United States held its breath when, for 38 minutes, it looked like Hawaii would be the victim of a ballistic missile attack.
When it turned out to not be the case, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Accusations flew, and some blamed President Donald Trump’s fiery rhetoric.
Then we learned that the employee who was responsible for issuing the alert was not fully cooperating with the internal investigation. This made many people wonder why, but it’s now being reported that he actually believed an attack was approaching Hawaii.
The Associated Press reports:
The Federal Communications Commission says a Hawaii employee who mistakenly sent an alert warning of a ballistic missile thought an actual attack was imminent. The FCC said Tuesday that Hawaii has been testing alert capabilities, and the employee mistook a drill for a real warning about a missile threat. He responded by sending the alert without sign-off from a supervisor.
The employee’s identity has yet to be revealed to the public, but he has been removed from that post and reassigned.
