Inmate admits to shank attack at Muskegon prison

A charge of assault with intent to murder was dropped.
MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A convicted murderer pleaded to an assault charge in the stabbing of another inmate in return for the dismissal of an attempted murder charge.
Douglas Lamont Williams, 34, was accused of using a shank – a makeshift knife – to stab another inmate multiple times in the face and head in a common area of the Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility in Muskegon. The assault occurred in February 2017.
He had been charged with assault with intent to murder, but the prosecutor’s office agreed to the lesser charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm in return for Williams’ guilty plea on Tuesday, Jan. 30. He also pleaded guilty to being a prisoner in possession of a weapon.

Muskegon County Circuit Judge Annette Smedley agreed to a maximum sentence of 66 months – five years and five months – to be served consecutive to any other prison sentence.
Williams is serving 23 to 40 years for a 2006 second-degree murder conviction out of Wayne County, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website. Following the assault, Williams was transferred to the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility.
