Police identify man killed in I-196 crash

The victim lost control of his pickup while trying to slow for vehicles stopped ahead.
OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – Police identified Kyle Grant, 27, of Zeeland, as the victim of a multi-vehicle fatal crash on I-196 in Hudsonville.
Grant died at the scene of the crash, reported at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3.
Another driver, Amanda Witteveen, 30, of West Olive, was taken by ambulance to a hospital where she was treated and released. Her children, ages 2 and 6 months, were not hurt.
Police said that Grant was driving a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck east on I-196 when his pickup approached a semi-truck that was slowing to a stop because of crashes and slide-offs ahead.
Grant tried to slow his pickup but lost control and it slid sideways into the rear of the semi-truck’s trailer and then into Witteveen’s vehicle.
The driver of the semi, Vasiliy Konevitchenko, 63, of London, Ontario, was not hurt.
Police closed the eastbound lanes of the highway from 32 nd Avenue to M-6 for nearly four hours while investigating and having vehicles towed from the scene.
The victim was using a seat belt, police said. Traffic was stopped on the highway when police were called to the scene.
