At Mobile World Congress Shanghai last June, Vivo showcased a prototype of the world’s first under display fingerprint scanner. It then went on to showcase the actual device – the Vivo X20 Plus screen fingerprint version at CES 2018, which concluded earlier this month. The brand has now officially launched the device in its home market of China.
The Vivo X20 Plus screen fingerprint version uses Synaptics Clear ID technology for its fingerprint sensor, which is situated in the middle of the bottom edge of the display. When the display is turned on, a digital fingerprint emblem is visible to let you know where the scanner is located. As for the fingerprint recognition, the sensor utilises the light emitting property of the OLED display to do so. Since the technology is still in its nascent stage, it is not as quick as hardware-based fingerprint scanners, but we can expect it to evolve over time. As of now, the Synaptics Clear ID can unlock the device in 0.6 to 0.7 seconds and can also be used to make secure payments over AliPay and WeChat.
Coming to the core specs of the handset, it is a variant of the X20 Plus, and features mostly the same spec sheet. The device ships with a 6.43-inch FHD+ display, which flaunts an 18:9 aspect ratio and features minimal bezels on the top and bottom. As for the performance, it gets Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 660 processor ticking at its core, with 4GB of RAM backing it. There is 128GB storage onboard, which can further be expanded up to 256GB using a microSD card. In the optics department, the device gets a 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel camera module at the back, and a 12-megapixel front camera. There is a beefy 3,800mAh battery fuelling the handset. On the software front, the handset runs FunTouch OS 3.2 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It comes with features like Face Wake facial recognition, Vivo Game Engine, AK4376A Hi-Fi audio chip and AI.
The Vivo X20 Plus screen fingerprint version comes with a price tag of RMB 3,598, which is roughly Rs 36,000. The brand already opened registrations for the handset in China. It will go on sale starting February 1st at 10am. There is no word on international availability at the moment, but we will update you whenever the information is made public.
