You know him as one of the heroes from the Boston Marathon bombings, and this year, Carlos Arredondo will be running the 26.2 miles for the first time.
Arredondo’s heroism became a beacon of what it means to be Boston Strong in the wake of the tragic events five years ago. His quick response is credited with saving the life of Jeff Bauman, whose story was adapted into a feature film.
This year, Arredondo will be running in honor of those who died and were injured on the fateful Monday in 2013.
“As a civilian first responder on 4/15/2013, I realize how important it is for each of us to step forward and assist,” he wrote on his fundraising page. “We all can be a first responder. Each person’s efforts can save a life.”
So far, Arredondo says his training is going well, with seven weeks to go until the running of the 122nd Boston Marathon.
“We’ve been here for many years, and it’s amazing,” he said. “To be a part of that is an honor, again, and it’s just overwhelming and happy to be part of this.”
The money raised will benefit the Arredondo Family Foundation, which helps the families of those who have died by military suicide.
