President Trump’s longtime aide Hope Hicks breezed past reporters Tuesday as she headed to a closed-door interview with the House Intelligence Committee as part of its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Hicks, the 29-year-old White House communications director, arrived on Capitol Hill with her lawyer and didn’t respond to shouted questions from reporters, acknowledging the media with a quick wave.
A confidant of Trump, Hicks was originally scheduled to appear before the House panel in January, but the hearing was scrapped after questions arose on what she could testify about because of executive privilege.
She has already been interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators.
Often called Trump’s “real daughter,” Hicks has had a ringside seat to the campaign, the transition and the president’s first year in office.
She was on Air Force One when the White House drafted a statement about a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower between Donald Trump Jr., presidential adviser and son-in-law Jared Kusher and former campaign manager Paul Manafort and a Russian lawyer with links to President Vladimir Putin.
The statement raised questions about whether Trump was trying to obstruct justice about the meeting.
Hicks also found herself embroiled in controversy for her part in crafting a statement defending former White House staffer Rob Porter after two of his ex-wives raised allegations that he physically abused them.
She was dating Porter at the time.
