Chinese chipmaker MediaTek has announced its latest mid-range mobile SoC at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. Dubbed the Helio P60, MediaTek’s new mid-range SoC offers significantly improved performance compared to the previous generation, along with some AI chops.
The Helio P60 is an octa-core chipset with four powerful ARM Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz. Both the clusters are paired together using the big. LITTLE architecture. MediaTek claims the Helio P60 is capable of delivering up to 70% higher performance compared to the Helio P23. And thanks to it being manufactured on a 12nm FinFET process by TSMC, power consumption is said to be down by 25% in heavy duty gaming situations. Overall, MediaTek claims up to 12% power savings.
Coming to AI, the Helio P60 features MediaTek’s NeuroPilot AI technology with a multi-core APU and class-leading performance of 280GMAC/s. The multi-core AI processing unit (Mobile APU) enables deep learning facial recognition, object and scene identification, user behavior-informed performance and other AI application enhancements.
The first smartphones powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 SoC are expected to be released in early Q2 2018.
