ING Bank says goodbye to Microsoft’s mobile OS
This is exactly what Dutch bank ING is planning to do after the company launched its Windows Phone app in 2013, now planning to focus exclusively on Android and iOS given the current state of the platform.
ING said its Windows 10 Mobile application would stop working on April 16 this year, and users are recommended to either switch to a different platform or connect to the web-based mobile banking services.
The bank itself explains that Microsoft is the only one to blame for its decision to wave goodbye to Windows phones, as the company no longer supports its mobile operating system.
“Microsoft has stopped supporting the software for Windows phone. Security updates are therefore no longer available. We continue to improve our safety standards and an outdated operating system does not align with this strategy. That’s why we abandon this app,” ING said.
“We understand that it is annoying that you can no longer use the app, but safe mobile banking goes for everything. If you have another device (including tablet) with iOS or Android, you can download and activate the mobile banking pp on it.”
Windows 10 Mobile is super-close to 0 percent market share, and without a doubt, sooner or later nobody’s going to use the platform given that no new features are being released. Microsoft will continue to provide security updates until mid-2019, but beyond this point, no other improvements will see daylight and the platform will be abandoned for good.
Without Microsoft’s commitment to the platform, it’s only a matter of time until all developers focus on iOS and Android, so expect more such bad news in the coming weeks and months, as we get closer to the end of support date.
