Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai has turned down what seems to have been an unexpected “Courage Under Fire” award — a handmade long gun — given to him by the National Rifle Association at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week, according to a new report.
Pai sent letters to the gun lobby and the American Conservative Union on Thursday, citing ethics rules in turning down the award, Politico reports.
The NRA reportedly awarded him the gun because of his work in overturning net neutrality rules established under President Obama. Pai, who was elevated to his position by President Trump, drafted the controversial order, which was approved in a 3-2 partisan vote.

Pai has reportedly received threats, including racist comments, over his stance on net neutrality. He was born in the United States to Indian immigrants.
Ethics rules appear to prohibit FCC officials from receiving gifts worth more than $200 without written clearance, Politico reported.
Pai’s spokeswoman has not returned a request for comment Friday.
In Pai’s letter, he is said to have written, “I have also been advised by the FCC’s career ethics attorneys that I would not be able to accept the award upon my departure from government service.”
