HESPERIA, MI – Students are in class today at Hesperia High School after a student made threatening statements on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
« We are recognizing concern this evening from parents regarding a high school student and some statements he made this afternoon to other students about wanting to shoot up the school, » said Superintendent Vaughn White, in a Facebook post.
The nation is on edge after a school shooting in Florida on Feb. 14 that resulted in 17 deaths.
Law enforcement is present at the school today, White said, not because there’s a threat, but to ease the overall concern from parents.
The student made the statement to his peers near the end of the day. Students then notified a teacher, who told the high school principal, who then contact police, White said Thursday, March 1.
The student was detained, interviewed and sent home, he said in the Facebook post.
« The student has been vetted through law enforcement and there’s no credible threat of harm, » White said Thursday. « This was a student who was frustrated and made a blanket statement. »
The student has been suspended, he added.
« I am confident of the safety of students at school tomorrow as this student will not be present and will be getting the help he needs, » White said in the post. « We take the safety of your children very seriously. »
