ANN ARBOR — Michigan made official on Thursday the promotion of Ed Warinner, the ex-Minnesota coach hired in January to serve as an offensive analyst.
Warinner joins the Michigan football coaching staff and will be in charge of the offensive line.
The move was anticipated, and reported weeks ago, after offensive coordinator Tim Drevno, who doubled as Michigan’s offensive line coach, resigned from his post.
Drevno has since taken a job coaching the running backs at the University of Southern California. Warinner, meanwhile, seems to be situated in his role already.
Shortly after Drevno’s departure, Warinner changed his Twitter profile to read: « Offensive Line Coach, University of Michigan. »
Warinner, 56, signed a two-year employment agreement with Michigan on Jan. 19 that was set to pay him $250,000 a year as a senior offensive analyst.
He came to Ann Arbor after one season on staff at the University of Minnesota, where he coached the offensive line and served as run-game coordinator for P. J. Fleck. There, he was paid a salary of $350,000.
Prior to Minnesota, Warinner spent five seasons as offensive coordinator at Ohio State. He also had stints at Notre Dame, Kansas, Illinois, Army, Air Force and Akron.
He takes over a Michigan offensive line with some work to do. Spots are open at right and left tackles, with plenty of talent on the interior.

Asked about Warinner last month, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said the two were quickly becoming best friends.
« With as good a coach as he is, I plan on us (having) a long and trusting friendship, » Harbaugh said. « With Ed Warinner and the Michigan football program. I’ve been very, very impressed with Ed. »
With Warinner’s promotion official, Michigan’s 11-person coaching staff appears set for the 2018 season. The only question that remains pertains the role of offensive coordinator, which has not yet been announced.
