Samsung is secretly working on a new device called Galaxy Note 9. Since last one year there are rumours that Samsung is developing an in-screen fingerprint technology for Galaxy Note 9 but now Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities, as reported by AppleInsider, has said that the company will most likely put the feature on hold due to some technical issues.
« According to our understanding of the technologies, under-display fingerprint solutions may currently have many technical issues (e.g. screen protectors and different environments affecting recognition rates and power-consumption), » report quotes Kuo from one of the notes to investors.
KGI Securities last year made a similar statement about Galaxy S9 and S9+, saying that the two phones would come with traditional fingerprint sensor which they did and added that Samsung could introduce an in-screen fingerprint sensor in Galaxy Note 9.
However, KGI is not the first to say this. Only few weeks ago, we saw a report from Mobile Syrup that said that Samsung could place the sensor at the rear of the phone, right below the camera module.
Several industry experts say that in-screen fingerprint sensors have poor accuracy and durability compared to the traditional ones. There was a similar rumour about iPhone X before its launch. There were reports that Apple could place an in-display fingerprint sensor in the phone but that didn’t happen as the company didn’t have the technology ready at that time.
While big tech names like Samsung and Vivo are still struggling with this technology, a comparatively smaller name than Apple or Samsung but China’s major smartphone maker, has done the unimaginable by launching world’s first in-screen fingerprint sensor phone called Vivo X20 Plus UD. The smartphone sports a 6.43-inch 2160 x 1080 18:9 OLED display with very thin bezels on top and bottom. The phone has been built in collaboration with Synaptics, the US-based sensor maker.
Coming back to Galaxy Note 9, the smartphone is rumoured to launch around August 2018 and could cost around USD929 that roughly translates to Rs 60,473. Samsung’s next phablet is expected to come with an all-glass screen and certainly have a dual camera set up on the back. Some augmented reality features can also be expected in the phone such as 3D scanning technology and face recognition.
