The social network’s flagship messaging app became a lot more visual.
Facebook Messenger became a lot more visual with this week’s announcement that it can now handle 360-degree photos and HD-quality 720p videos.
Product managers for Messenger Sean Kelly and Hagen Green revealed in a Newsroom post that 360-degree photos are available globally on Messenger’s iOS and Android applications, while HD-quality videos are only available in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the U. K. and the U. S.
Messenger users will see a compass icon on the right-hand side of 360-degree photos, and an HD or SD marker in the lower-right-hand side of videos, and the quality of those videos can be changed directly via those markers while videos are being viewed in full-screen mode.
Kelly and Green wrote, “For 360-degree photos in Messenger, simply set your phone camera to panorama and snap a photo or capture a 360-degree photo using a 360 photo app or camera. Then share it in Messenger as you would a normal photo. From there, we’ll convert it to an immersive, envy-inducing photo that your friends and loved ones can experience on mobile by tapping and dragging the photo or by moving their phone, and on Messenger.com by clicking and dragging. To share HD videos, you can either share a video saved on your phone, from your News Feed or even share a video from one message thread to another.”
