The Hawkeye hype-train continues
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said that Hawkeye’s disappearance from Avengers: Infinity War marketing is the best thing that could have happened to the character.
Feige spoke to io9 about Hawkeye at the Infinity War press conference, checking in to make sure the superhero (and everyone’s favorite Legolas cosplayer) was doing alright. Hawkeye hasn’t appeared in any of Marvel’s official trailers or posters, and was only spotted for a second in a MCU-10-years-later tease. Feige joked that, considering Hawkeye is everyone’s favorite Avenger to tease, it’s a blessing that he’s not in any of the marketing. Suddenly people cared about Hawkeye again, now that he’s gone missing, Feige said.
“There are big, big story things coming up for Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner is as strong an actor as anyone in the MCU and awesome as this character,” Feige said. “But ‘The guy with the bow and arrow jokes’, right? There are a lot of ‘Guy with bow and arrow jokes.’ He even makes ‘Guy with a bow and arrow’ jokes in some of the movies. So I love that people go from ‘Oh, Hawkeye is just lucky to be there’ to ‘Oh where is he? He’s not there? What’s going to happen? We need Hawkeye. We want more Hawkeye.’
“I love it. It’s the best.”
Feige’s comments are similar to those from Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who have previously suggested Hawkeye has a promising future ahead of him. Patience is a virtue, the Russo brothers said, hinting that all will be revealed in due time. The Russo brothers expanded on that brief tease while talking to io9 alongside Feige, suggesting Hawkeye’s inclusion “in this group of insurgents” after Captain America: Civil War has forced him “to deal with the ramifications of siding against the U. S. government.”
Still, no one is answering the simplest question: Will Hawkeye appear in Avengers: Infinity War, or will we have to wait until Avengers 4?
We’ll know in a few days. Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 27.
