2K Games has a « top-secret » studio working on the next BioShock, according to a report. The game is currently being developed under the codename Parkside.
A “top-secret” studio is working on the next BioShock game, and it’s currently being developed under the codename Parkside.
The fact a new BioShock game is currently in development should come as a shock to absolutely no one.
According to Kotaku, former employees of Mafia 3 studio Hangar 13 have joined a top-secret studio to work on the next BioShock, which goes by the codename Parkside.
After a round of layoffs at Hangar 13 back in February, many employees moved on or joined the team working on Parkside. The remaining team members of Hangar 13 were kept in the dark on what the project entailed, until word slipped out it was a new BioShock title.
“If anyone from Hangar 13 tried to strike up a conversation with them, they’d say, ‘Oh, we can’t really talk about it,’” a source close to the studio told Kotaku. “It was all very tight-lipped.”
In numerous financial briefings over the last fiscal year, Take-Two has stated 2K Games has a “highly anticipated new title” from one of its major franchises in the works.
Many think this new title could be a new BioShock or Borderlands entry. While many are leaning towards it being Borderlands 3, it could be the new BioShock, because the franchise is really important to the company.
Take-Two is never one to be drawn on information regarding unannounced titles. Instead, it allows the studios to decide when it’s time to reveal a project.
Back in 2013, former Gears of War producer Rod Fergusson, who had joined Irrational Games to assist with the development of BioShock Infinite, announced he was heading up a new studio for 2K Games located in the Bay Area.
2K Games confirmed Fergusson’s announcement, but wouldn’t comment on the studio nor what it would be working on.
Whether this studio is the same one working on the next BioShock at the moment is not known. What little evidence is available at present though, seems to point in that direction.
Back in 2014, Ken Levine announced he had shuttered Bioshock studio Irrational Games, and that 2K would maintain the rights to the franchise.
Parent company Take-Two announced a few months later 2K Marin in Novato, California would be responsible for shepherding the series going forward. 2K Marin happens to be located next door to Hangar 13 – both of which are loacted in the Bay Area.
Fergusson ended up leaving the still unnamed studio in 2014 to lead Microsoft Vancouver outfit Black Tusk Studios in developing Gears of War 4. Further information on his stint with 2K Games was never provided.
We’ll keep an eye out for any other information that pops up. In the meantime, hit up the link to Kotaku to read the full story on Hangar 13.
