A U. S. Army soldier from Austin was killed by a roadside bomb in northern Syria this week, the Defense Department said Saturday.
Master Sgt. Johnathan J. Dunbar, 36, died Friday from his injuries after an explosive detonated near his patrol in Manbij, Syria, during an operation against the Islamic State group, officials said.
British soldier Sgt. Matt Tonroe also died in the bombing Thursday, CNN reported, and five other people were wounded.
Dunbar is the fourth American service member to die in Syria since the U. S. began attacking Islamic State group militants there in September 2014, according to the Pentagon. He was assigned to headquarters of the U. S. Army Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, N. C.
Dunbar first entered the U. S. Army in May 2005, ArmyTimes reported. He had been deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq during his service.
The bombing that killed Dunbar is under investigation, the Defense Department said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
