In addition to the 43-year-old woman who was ejected and died, three others, including a 14-year-old boy, were hurt in the crash.
Rasean Preston, a 31-year-old Detroit man, faces 11 charges related to a drunken driving crash Saturday morning that killed one woman and injured three people on the city’s west side.
Preston was denied bond Monday at his arraignment, and is remanded to the custody of Wayne County Jail as his case is decided.
Police say that on April 28 at about 2 a.m., a 21-year-old woman was exiting the parking lot of a White Castle at Joy Road and Greenfield in her 2002 Ford Explorer. A gray 2011 Chevy Traverse, which police say was « driving at a high rate of speed, » struck the Explorer and caused it to strike a pole.
A 43-year-old woman was ejected from the Explorer and died.
The driver, the 21-year-old woman, was left in critical condition, while a 14-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man, who were both in the backseats, were left in temporary serious condition.
The driver of the Traverse stayed at the scene and was arrested.
Preston faces 11 counts including second-degree murder, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, operating a vehicle with a high blood alcohol content of .17 or above, which is more than twice the legal limit in Michigan, three of reckless driving and three of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury.
He is due back in court on May 14 for a probable cause conference, and again on May 21 for a preliminary exam, both before Judge William McConico at Third Circuit Court in downtown Detroit.
The fatal crash came less than a year after Preston was discharged from the Michigan prison system. In June 2017, Preston was released after serving nearly four years of a one-to-five year sentence for possession of a « short barreled rifle, » records show.
