Seoul: U. S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday said that Washington is committed to cooperate with North Korea to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Pompeo arrived in Pyongyang to discuss details of a summit going to be held between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U. S. President Donald Trump.
During the meeting at Pyongyang’s Koryo Hotel, Pompeo also said there are still “many challenges along the way,” but he added, “You have been a great partner in working to make sure our two leaders will have a summit that is successful,” as quoted by Yonhap.
Earlier, Kim said that he had high expectations that the United States will play a big role in establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Responding to Kim’s statement, Pompeo said that the U. S. is equally committed to working to achieve exactly that.
According to the Washington Post, Kim also said that from now on, the North would concentrate all its efforts into the country’s “economic progress.”
This is Pompeo’s second visit to Pyongyang in just over a month as the U. S. President prepares to hold a one-on-one summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
After having finalized the date and venue of the meet, Pompeo is expected to return to the U. S. with three American citizens being held in the North.
