Comedian and HBO host Bill Maher caught a lot of flack after he said he hoped for a recession that would tank President Donald Trump’s popularity. During his Friday show, he refused to back down from those statements.
“Anyone who went apes**t the last two weeks because I said going through a recession would be worth it if it undermined Trump’s popularity has to enroll in college and take a course in perspective,” Maher told his audience.
He warned that while recessions were “survivable events,” American democracy was about to perish because of Trump, whom Maher described as a “dodo bird.”
“A recession is a survivable event. What Trump is doing to this country is not,” he argued.
He went on to claim that the United States survived recessions every time a Republican took the White House.
“Every Republican president since Teddy Roosevelt has presided over a recession,” he said.
Maher said that a recession was inevitable because of Trump’s policies:
“The United States has survived 47 recessions at all, and since the Great Depression, we’ve never gone more than 10 years without one.
