An internal White House economic study found that President Trump ‘s tariffs will harm U. S. economic growth, The New York Times reported on Thursday.
The analysis, reportedly from the White House Council of Economic Advisers, has not be circulated publicly.
The council’s chairman, Kevin Hassett, said that Trump was a strong negotiator when asked by the Times if the council had considered the impact of a trade war with China.
Economists, Democrats and even some Republicans have warned about the harm a trade war could do to U. S. workers.
The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
The report comes after the Trump administration last week slapped tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada, and Mexico.
Trump has faced substantial international pushback on his trade moves, but he remained combative on the issue Thursday ahead of a G-7 summit in Canada.
On Wednesday, the World Trade Organization advanced trade complaints against the U. S. from the EU and Canada.
Canada and Mexico have also responded with retaliatory tariffs.
And China announced on Sunday that all trade deals currently being discussed with the U. S. would not go into effect if the administration implemented its proposed tariffs on Chinese goods.
