Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Wednesday that he wants to ensure he is on the same page as President Trump ahead of the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“I want to make sure to be on the same page with President Trump ahead of the first-ever U. S.-North Korea summit so we can push forward nuclear and missile issues, and most importantly the abduction problem, and make for a successful summit,” Abe told reporters.
The Japanese leader is stopping in Washington on Thursday before he heads with Trump to the G-7 summit in Canada.
“Ahead of this historic U. S.-North Korea summit, I will meet President Trump to coordinate in order to advance progress on the nuclear issue, missiles and – most importantly – the abductees issue,” Abe said, referring to the kidnapping of Japanese citizens by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s.
