Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us franchise has reached 17 million in sales, as it marks its fifth anniversary.
PlayStation began its E3 2018 conference by showing gameplay footage from The Last of Us 2 for the very first time. It’s a testament to the franchise’s massive popularity that it has reached a new milestone even with only one game released to date. Naughty Dog announced that the franchise has reached a whopping 17 million in sales as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.
Naughty Dog announced the incredible sales milestone for the franchise yesterday on Twitter. It coincided with the franchise’s fifth anniversary. The Last of Us was originally released in 2013 on the PS3. The game then received a re-release on the PS4 merely one year later, albeit with improvements which include 60 FPS and better visuals.
It remains an impressive achievement for the developer, as it gears for the upcoming release of its highly-anticipated The Last of Us 2. The recently released gameplay trailer for the game showed an older Ellie dancing and kissing a woman at a party before the scene abruptly shifts to a darker setting. The combat looks similar to its predecessor but looks more polished and even more brutal if that’s even possible.
The Last of Us 2 will probably be the first triple-A game in history to feature an openly LGTB protagonist. Sure, we’ve seen queer characters in other games but never as the main playable character in a triple-A game. However, this also excludes games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age, which puts the character’s sexual orientation in the hands of players instead of being written that way.
Despite being one of PlayStation’s major attractions at E3 2018, The Last of Us 2 still hasn’t received a release date or even a release window of any kind. If this keeps up, there’s a high probability that we will be seeing the highly-anticipated sequel in 2019 instead of this year as was initially predicted. Meanwhile, check out the gameplay trailer for the game below.
