NBC’s Chuck Todd warned on Friday that President Donald Trump may have “over-hyped” strong economic numbers.
WATCH:
After Trump touted the 4.1 percent quarterly GDP growth rate — the highest rate in roughly four years — Todd immediately took to NBC to downplay the president’s success. (RELATED: US ECONOMY GREW AT 4.1 PERCENT RATE IN SECOND QUARTER OF 2018)
“You know, Savannah, you can tell there was sort of an urgency in the president’s voice that bordered on, of almost pulling a muscle trying to pat yourself on the back,” Todd said. “You could feel he knows there’s all those other headlines out there that are not good.”
Todd suggested that the president was using the economic numbers to hide administrative scandals and warned viewers that he could be over-hyping the good economic news.
“I get it. Politically, he needs to do this, Savannah,” he told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. “But I can tell you, there is a sense of where you over-hype something, and there were so many times in those remarks that it felt over-hyped in how he was talking about the economy.”
William Boyd also contributed to this report.
