Miraculously, divers on Monday reached the 12 missing Thai boys and their coach still alive, holding on deep in the flooded Tham Luang cave system. But they need at least one more miracle.
Ten days after the soccer club got trapped, British divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton found the beleaguered youths crying, “eat, eat, eat.”
Rescuers have gotten them food, fresh water and air, but getting them out will be dicey: They’re miles from the entrance, the caves are still flooded and a new downpour is on the way.
Fresh flooding soon will likely make any rescue impossible for months; their best hope may be a rush effort to pull them out now. But that entails swimming miles in scuba gear with minimal training, when they’re still weakened by their ordeal.
Experts consider that scenario highly dangerous — but so would be a plan to try supplying them for weeks through increasingly inaccessible caves.
Pray the crews working feverishly for a rescue can find a way.
