Ms. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has waged a legal battle against President Trump over a nondisclosure agreement.
WASHINGTON — A lawyer for the pornographic film actress Stephanie Clifford said on Monday that she and her husband had decided to end their marriage, days after Ms. Clifford, who goes by the stage name Stormy Daniels, was mistakenly arrested at an Ohio strip club.
Ms. Clifford’s husband, Glendon Crain, also a pornographic film actor, filed a divorce petition last week in a State District Court in Texas, seeking child support and custody of the couple’s 7-year-old daughter.
Mr. Crain and Ms. Clifford, who gained national prominence after alleging she had an affair with President Trump before he took office, were married in 2015.
The gossip website TMZ reported that Mr. Crain had accused Ms. Clifford of adultery and had successfully sought a restraining order against her.
Ms. Clifford’s lawyer, Michael J. Avenatti, wrote on Twitter that the divorce petition was inaccurate and “vehemently disputed,” but confirmed that his client and Mr. Crain were divorcing.
Two weeks ago, Ms. Clifford, who has been touring strip clubs across the nation, was in Columbus, Ohio, for a two-night gig when she was arrested on three counts of illegal sexually oriented activity, after four detectives from the city’s Police Department were sent to investigate complaints “alleging prostitution and drug activity.”
Charges were dropped when Ms. Clifford established that she was not a regular employee of the club. Mr. Avenatti argued that Ms. Clifford was set up and that the arrest was politically motivated. The Columbus police acknowledged the arrest was an error.
Ms. Clifford has lately been an inescapable feature of tabloid-tinged news cycles about Mr. Trump’s pre-presidential life. In April, she sued Mr. Trump after he made statements on Twitter that questioned her credibility. She sued in March to get out of a nondisclosure agreement she had signed before the 2016 election, saying it was void because Mr. Trump had not signed it.
That lawsuit came after Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, had tried to prevent her from speaking out. Mr. Trump’s representatives have denied that he had a sexual encounter with Ms. Clifford.
On Monday, after announcing Ms. Clifford’s divorce, Mr. Avenatti wrote on Twitter that she “kindly asks for privacy for the sake of her family.” Ms. Clifford’s daughter, Mr. Avenatti said, “remains her number one priority.”
Ms. Clifford, just hours later, said no such privacy was needed.
“I don’t need or want privacy,” she wrote on Twitter . “I want truth. And it will come out. I’m not afraid.”
