Summer Games Done Quick 2018 officially breaks another fund-raising record by raising more than $2 million for the non-profit organization Doctors Without Borders.
At the tail end of June, Summer Games Done Quick 2018 began for those who like to see speedruns for a slew of games from various eras, and now it has closed out its final 24 hours by raising nearly $1 million in donations, which has ultimately assisted in breaking another fund-raising record for the charity gaming marathon. As it so happens, SGDQ 2018 has managed to generate over $2 million dollars for the non-profit organization Doctors Without Borders.
This much was announced by Summer Games Done Quick 2018 organizers, who revealed the record total by way of a press release this morning, with funds likely to increase as donations continue to roll in throughout the final day of the event. SGDQ 2018 officially ended around 3:00 AM this morning, and as of writing, the whole event has been able to generate $2,127,824. So, it will be interesting to see what the final tally will be.
For those unaware, Summer Games Done Quick 2018 beat last year’s donations by an incredibly respectable margin, as SGDQ 2017 was able to pull in $1.76 million for Doctors Without Borders, which was the organization’s fund-raising record at that point. Each year since SGDQ’s humble origins has seen it raise increasingly larger sums of money for charity, while also expanding the event in size and scale, with there having been 153 games being beaten by speedruns in 2018.
All things considered, it’s great to see Summer Games Done Quick 2018 continue to top the previous year’s highest fund-raising efforts, as it means that the event’s popularity continues to grow, which will invariably help NGOs like Doctors Without Borders in the long run. So, hopefully, the next Games Done Quick event – that is, Games Done Quick Express at TwitchCon, October 26-28 in San Jose, California – will be able to bring in a hearty dose of financial support for the charities participating in TwitchCon’s Charity Plaza.
