The World of Warcraft community has seen a resurgence, with the release of Battle for Azeroth becoming the best-selling expansion ever for the long-running MMORPG.
Almost two weeks ago, Blizzard released their newest expansion for their long-running MMORPG World of Warcraft with Battle for Azeroth. Battle for Azeroth is the seventh expansion to release in the past 11 years, beginning in 2007 with Burning Crusade, and while each expansion has brought with it new continents to explore and races to play as, not all of them have given players enough reasons to return. Thankfully Battle for Azeroth has pushed the community back in the right direction, and with record sales numbers to prove it.
Blizzard has recently announced that World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth reached 3.4 million sales in its first day. Since it first launched all the way back in 2004, World of Warcraft has had three of their other expansions surpass the 3 million sales milestone: Catacylsm (2010), Warlords of Draenor (2014), and Legion (2016). The new expansion didn’t just catch attention on launch day due to its high sales numbers, as Twitch saw the game surpass Fortnite in concurrent viewers the day after it launched.
World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth‘s expansion sees the game’s level cap increase to 120, with the newest raid, Uldir, set to go live on September 4th for all players. Other large-scale changes include the PvP aspects of the competitive scene, especially in the newest mode, War. Other major changes with the new expansion include six new zones available across two news continents, a new story arc conflict between the Orc and Human races, and Island Expeditions. The new adventures of Battle for Azeroth have been well received by many, read our Battle for Azeroth review, as the sales numbers have shown people are still willing to invest time in the game’s massive world.
Seeing the success of the new expansion is a testament to Blizzard’s continued push for World of Warcraft in recent years. Back in October 2010, the total number of subscriptions for World of Warcraft hit its peak at around 12 million players. However, for the last few years, Blizzard hasn’t publicly released their subscriber counts, possibly due to their player base starting to decline. With Battle for Azeroth becoming the most successful expansion per its sales on launch day, it’s clear there’s still a large enough audience looking for more.
World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is available now on PC.
