Danny Boyle won’t be directing the new James Bond movie after all.
An announcement made Tuesday by the producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and the actor Daniel Craig on the film franchise’s official Twitter account said that Mr. Boyle had decided not to direct the film because of “creative differences.”
Mr. Boyle, who won an Academy Award for best director in 2009 for “Slumdog Millionaire,” signed on as director of the next Bond movie this Spring. It’s not clear what prompted his decision to leave the film, and representatives for Mr. Boyle declined to comment.
It not the first time the production — referred to as “Bond 25” for its position as the 25th movie in the franchise by the producers’ count — has experienced personnel changes, though.
The screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who worked on the last six Bond films, were originally set to write “Bond 25” as well, but when Mr. Boyle signed on as director it was announced he would work on the script with John Hodge, a longtime collaborator.
Mr. Craig, who has played James Bond in the last four films, said in 2015 that he had no desire to reprise the role. Nevertheless, last summer, he confirmed that he would come back as 007 for “Bond 25.”
Filming is set to start in December, with the movie scheduled to be released in Britain in October 2019 and in North America that November.
