The Motorola Moto G5 is quite an old phone, but Lenovo being caring towards it. The mid-range smartphone from 2017 has finally started to receive the Android 8.1 Oreo update. We’ve known for some time, that Motorola has been testing the software on the device.
Earlier this year, we spotted the device running Android 8.1 Oreo on Geekbench. The soak testing was being conducted for the new software. The Moto G5 originally came with Android 7.0 Nougat, so this is a nice big update. Motorola has skipped the Android 8.0 Oreo update, and gone directly to 8.1. The Moto G5S, which is the successor to the Moto G5, has already received the software update.
It has taken Motorola quite a long time to release this update. The software update cycle for the phones have taken a toll after Motorola was bought by Lenovo. This could be the last major software update for the G5, but we hope that’s not the case. The phones are capable of running the new Android 9.0 Pie software, but then again, it could be another year for the company to roll out the update. Instead, you can just buy the new Moto G6 or other new Moto phones.
Motorola Moto G6: Eight Tips And Tricks To Make The Most Out Of It
The update is currently rolling out to the Indian variant of the Moto G5. It is available as an OTA update, and you should be notified very soon, if you haven’t been already. You can also head to Settings > About Phone > System Updates and check for the new update.
An XDA Forum user posted about the OTA update, and has also provided the official release notes from Motorola. The change-log is small, and states that the update also includes the August Android security patch, and several bug fixes and performance improvements. However, the main new feature of this update, is obviously the upgrade to the new OS. Your device will go from Android 7.1.2 Nougat, to Android 8.1 Oreo.
The new OS update includes several new features and UI changes. Most importantly, there are battery improvements, which should increase the battery life of the phone. The notification system has also been improved, and you should see better data saving. The update also brings several UI changes, such as changes to the Quick Settings Panel, Power Menu, and others. Apart from that, update will also included features such as Smart Text Selection, Picture-in-Picture Mode, and Autofill.
Users who have installed the update, have noticed performance improvements with the new OS. So, if you have received the notification for the update, we recommend you install it right away. But please go through with it after making sure your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network, and you have more than 50 percent charge on your device.
The Moto G5 is an ageing smartphone, which comes with a 5.0-inch Full HD display and an aluminium body. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 430 processor, paired with up to 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. A microSD slot is available for memory expansion.
Motorola One Power with Dual Cameras, 5000mAh Battery launched for a Price of Rs 15,999
For cameras, you get a single 13MP sensor at the back, with LED flash. On the front, there’s a 5MP camera for selfies. The phone is backed by a 2800mAh battery, and you get a front-mounted fingerprint sensor. A home button is also present, which also supports navigation gestures. A pretty decent mid-range smartphone, but we would definitely not recommend buying one in this day and age.
