House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Friday she was “prayerful” that “divine intervention” would prevent Judge Brett Kavanaugh from becoming the next Supreme Court justice.
Her comments came after a testy hearing on Thursday when Kavanaugh vehemently denied ever committing sexual assault .
A reporter asked Pelosi what she thought Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N. Y.) should do if Democrats won the House of Representatives and he became the next House Judiciary Chair.
“Should Nadler do hearings next year?” a reporter asked, according to The Washington Free Beacon .
“Well, let’s see,” Pelosi replied. “Look, I’m ever hopeful of an intervention — prayerful of a divine intervention.”
Kavanaugh’s confirmation had especially high stakes given that his presence would solidify a conservative majority on the nation’s highest court. His vote could help ensure conservative decisions on religious liberty, abortion, and gun rights.
By Friday afternoon, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved Kavanaugh’s nomination with a vote along partisan lines:

While an official vote count is currently unknown, Republicans are expected to have enough to ultimately confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court — just another one of Trump’s initiatives that would likely appease his socially conservative base.
This wasn’t the first time Pelosi invoked religion from the podium. She previously called one of Trump’s executive orders “really sinful” and “degrading of God’s creation.” She’s also called herself a “devout practicing Catholic” while defending her position on funding for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.
